ZRS 30-Day Evaluation

Securing Mission Critical Data

The Zope Replication Services (ZRS) product suite increases the reliability and performance of all Zope enterprise clusters. ZRS provides standby servers that maintain redundant data storage and eliminate the storage system as a single point of failure.

Sites with high availability requirements must guard against planned and unplanned downtimes. Planned outages include system maintenance, software / operating system upgrades, and backups. Unplanned outages include system and hardware failures. ZRS reduces the downtime associated with these events by:

  • replicating and distributing mission-critical data storage across distinct physical storages, (optionally in distinct geographic locations)
  • providing fast, transparent failover to a standby server, and
  • providing tools to manage and monitor the standby servers.

ZRS is built on top of the Spread toolkit, a reliable group communication package developed by Spread Concepts LLC, and the Center for Networking and Distributed Systems at John Hopkins University.

Back-up and Maintenance

Should the primary storage fail, a secondary storage can take its place. Zope servers transparently reconnect to the new ZRS server. Secondary servers can be taken off-line at any time to undergo repairs, backups, or system upgrades. When a secondary returns to service, it automatically resynchronizes with the primary server.

ZRS makes scheduled maintenance manageable, because primary service can be shifted to a secondary while the primary machine is being upgraded. ZRS also improves scalability since secondary servers can optionally provide additional read-only ZEO connections while maintaining their replication functions. ZEO client storages can thus be configured to connect to any available secondary, or load-balanced among the available secondary ZRS servers.

Scalability

Adding new secondary ZRS Servers to the system is a simple process of adding the machine description to a configuration file, and starting the secondary software on the new host. A recovery process is initiated on the newly commissioned secondary storage, ensuring that it is current with respect to the primary storage.

Proven Reliability

ZRS has provided the high-availability and disaster recovery solution critical to large-scale public and internal Zope deployments for years. Premier brands including the VIACOM radio and television group, AARP, CNHI Community Newspaper Holdings Inc., and the Joint Intelligence Center, Pacific (JICPAC) rely on ZRS to ensure reliability and scalability for their mission-critical Web sites.

30-Day Evaluation

Zope Corporation is now offering a risk-free 30 day trial of ZRS. Evaluating organizations may install and operate ZRS on up to five (5) primary ZODB servers and an unlimited number of secondary servers for up to thirty (30) days. Usage beyond this time will require a license from Zope Corporation.. ZRS is compatible with Zope 2 versions 2.4 and higher as well Zope 3.0
